Jabir and the Method
The laboratory procedures that would become chemistry were assembled by alchemists whose theory was wrong and whose equipment still works.
The corpus attributed to Jabir ibn Hayyan runs to thousands of items, which is more than one person wrote. Modern scholarship treats most of it as the product of a later school, probably Ismaili in orientation, writing under his name across the ninth and tenth centuries. Whether a historical Jabir stands behind the earliest layer is disputed.
The attribution problem does not affect the point, which is about content. The Jabirian corpus describes procedures: distillation, sublimation, crystallisation, calcination, filtration, evaporation. It describes apparatus for each. It insists, repeatedly and explicitly, that the operator must perform the operations rather than read about them, and it records quantities.
This is laboratory practice, and it is being written down as a transmissible discipline rather than as a set of secrets.
The theory the procedures served was wrong. The sulphur-mercury theory of metals, in which all metals are compounds of two principles in varying proportion and purity, provides a clear rationale for transmutation: adjust the proportion, change the metal. That theory is false, and the goal it licensed was unreachable.
But the work done in pursuit of it produced a large body of accurate procedural knowledge and a substantial catalogue of substances and their behaviour. The Jabirian and later Arabic alchemical literature is where mineral acids first appear in a form anyone can follow, and mineral acids are the single most consequential laboratory tool of the following thousand years.
The name follows the route. Alchemy, alembic, alkali, alcohol, elixir, athanor. So does the equipment. A distillation apparatus in a modern lab is a refinement of the same arrangement.
The methodological lesson is uncomfortable for both of the usual positions. It is not that the alchemists were secretly right. They were not. It is that a false theory pursued with genuine experimental discipline generated durable knowledge, and that the durable part was the procedure rather than the explanation.
This happens more than the tidy account of science admits. Phlogiston theory was wrong and the chemists working within it isolated gases. The caloric theory of heat was wrong and produced good thermodynamics. Being wrong about why is compatible with being extremely careful about what.
Which suggests a way to read discarded traditions that avoids both credulity and dismissal. Separate the procedure from the rationale. Ask what the practitioners actually did, repeatedly, and what they observed while doing it. That layer survives the collapse of the theory it was built on, and it is frequently the layer nobody looks at, because the theory is what makes the tradition embarrassing.
The alchemists were dismissed with their theory. The distillation column stayed.
