The Equipment She Left

Maria the Jewess designed apparatus still standing in laboratories, and almost nothing of her own writing survives.

A water bath, used to heat something gently and evenly by suspending it in hot water rather than over direct flame, is called a bain-marie in French, bagno maria in Italian, and Marienbad in German. Every one of those names points at the same person.

Maria the Jewess, sometimes Maria Prophetissa, worked in Alexandria at some point around the first to third century of the common era. Nothing she wrote survives directly. What is known comes through Zosimos of Panopolis, writing perhaps a century or two later, who quotes her, describes her apparatus, and treats her as an authority of the previous generation.

The apparatus is the substance of the claim, and it is unusually concrete for this period. Zosimos credits her with the tribikos, a still with three arms for collecting distillate; the kerotakis, a sealed vessel for exposing metals to vapour and recovering the product; and the balneum mariae, the water bath.

Two of those describe the essential operations of practical chemistry: controlled distillation and controlled reaction in a sealed vessel with vapour. The third solved the problem of applying heat below the point at which a substance decomposes, and it is the reason there is a piece of equipment with her name on it in kitchens and laboratories now.

The one saying attributed to her that circulated widely is the axiom about one becoming two, two becoming three, and out of the third the one as the fourth. It has been read as numerology for centuries. It has also been read as a description of an operational sequence, and given that her documented contribution is apparatus and procedure, the operational reading deserves at least equal standing.

The transmission pattern is the one this archive keeps meeting. The work survives because a later writer quoted it. The name survives attached to a device rather than to a text. And the survival was accidental: Zosimos was preserved because his writings were translated into Syriac and Arabic, which is the same road the rest of Greek science travelled.

There is a limitation to be honest about. The historicity of the person is not on the same footing as, say, Hypatia. There is no independent documentation of her life. What exists is a body of technique attributed consistently to a named woman by a source close enough to be credible.

That uncertainty is itself the finding. For a figure to whom three pieces of foundational laboratory equipment are attributed by the earliest authority in the field, the biographical record is a handful of quotations. For male contemporaries with comparable attributions, it is generally better.

The asymmetry did not begin with modern historians. It is in the transmission itself, in what was thought worth copying, by scribes who made those decisions one manuscript at a time.

Her equipment made it through. Almost everything else about her did not.
